Culture Shock 2008/02/26 23:25 Karma: 1
Hey everyone

This is particularly for the returnees, I was wondering how everyone else is settling back into Aussie life? Reverse Culture Shock, etc.

I didn't really feel any RCS until I came to uni. Now I am staying here in a catered college, and they don't serve a bowl of rice with everything, no miso soup at breakfast... no ocha (Japanese style tea). And also, we don't all get in the bath together at night which also seems like it is missing, lol!

This is also for peeps who will be getting to Japan soon. What things do you guys find give you culture shock?

Yeah I wanna go back to Japan already! 笑!

I'm not stalking you i promise! But i thought you should know that one of the returnees {i'm terrible to have forgotten her name} who went to Ustunomiya in Tochigi was feautred in her school's 2008 guide book!

Did they also take a picture of you for your school guide book?

And to keep on track in the topic i think the thing that would freak me out most is the communal baths, not so worried about food.

hey Garry!!!

haven't spoken to u for ages hey, not since we like ditched u at the airport to meet our families and get sleep while you had to wait in line to get your duty free alcohol passed, lolol.

ごめんね。

hey RCS definately happened more so than cultuire shock i swear. I was sooo tripped out at the airport (woulda have been loack of sleep as well for well the entire 20 months but especially the last week in Japan). I felt so tripped out and lazy and unmotivated to do stuff and I found it quite upsetting to be back home, lol. It kinda stopped for me when I did go to uni, lol, quite different to your situation hey.

I dno why, jsut because home was like something that WAS familiar, but had become unfamiliar? dunno if it makes sense, so I would compare my mums meals top Japanese ones, and be like when I was there, I did this blah blah blah blah, pretty much just wanted to back to Japan hey.

At uni we get rice for lunch and dinner most nights but its just not the same on a plate using a knife and fork and eating it with salad and a bitg slab of chicken/ unidentifiable meat drenched in a variety of different sauces...haha

oh how I miss Japanese tea. And lipton tea. And the ocha. And the junk food.

Although yesterday it was Japanese themed day, I was SOOOOOOOO excited, we had "karaage" which was alright, rice noodles, miso soup, rice noodles, and crappy umeboshi-I swear its not even umeboshi lol. BUT for dinner we had norimaki, SOOOO good!!!!!! I loved it, he rest of the college not so much I think....uncultured people, lol. Some of the vegoes did not like the look of the "deep fried vegetable"....it turns out it was tempura hahahahahaha.

do u have any plans to head back over netime soon? we shuld so have reunion, but itsso hard cuz we're all spread out over the country, I'm down in Sydnet now for uni.

neways hope alls well, and u still remember ur Japanese!!

mata ne.

Helen
